Environmental Management Measures: Carbon Reduction Plan
Altair Healthcare is committed to operating sustainably and playing our part in supporting the NHS and wider public sector's net-zero ambitions. We have developed and published a Carbon Reduction Plan that meets the requirements set out in PPN 06/21 and aligns with the Government’s target of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2050, or sooner where possible.
1. Carbon Reduction Plan – Overview
Our Carbon Reduction Plan has been completed in accordance with the guidance outlined by the Cabinet Office and includes:
• Our current greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions footprint (Scopes 1, 2, and partial Scope 3).
• Baseline emissions (2022/23).
• Reduction targets aligned with NHS Net Zero targets.
• Projects and measures underway or planned to reduce emissions.
• Annual reporting commitment to track and publish progress.
The full Carbon Reduction Plan has been published on our company website [or available upon request] and is reviewed and updated annually.
2. Baseline Emissions Footprint
Our baseline emissions for the financial year 2022/23 were calculated as:
• Scope 1 (Direct emissions): [e.g., 10 tCO₂e] – includes company vehicles and on-site fuel usage.
• Scope 2 (Indirect emissions from purchased energy): [e.g., 5 tCO₂e] – electricity use in offices and clinical settings.
• Scope 3 (Upstream and downstream activities – partial reporting): [e.g., 12 tCO₂e] – includes business travel, waste, and procurement.
3. Carbon Reduction Targets
We are committed to reducing our emissions by:
• 25% reduction in total GHG emissions by 2030 from the 2022/23 baseline.
• Achieving Net Zero by 2045, five years ahead of the UK government target.
4. Measures in Place and Planned
To support these targets, Altair Healthcare has implemented the following environmental management measures:
• Energy Efficiency: Upgrading to LED lighting, smart energy monitoring, and efficient heating systems in office locations.
• Green Travel: Promoting remote work and virtual meetings, reducing unnecessary travel, and encouraging the use of public transport or electric vehicles (EVs).
• Sustainable Procurement: Working with suppliers who meet environmental standards, and favouring local procurement to reduce transportation emissions.
• Waste Management: Increasing recycling rates, reducing paper use through digital systems, and ensuring responsible clinical and office waste disposal.
• Staff Engagement: Rolling out sustainability training, Green Champions, and internal awareness campaigns to embed environmentally responsible behaviour.
5. Monitoring and Reporting
Our Carbon Reduction Plan is overseen by our Sustainability Lead, who reports progress to the senior management team quarterly. We will:
• Publish updated emissions data and progress annually.
• Use recognised tools such as the GHG Protocol and NHS Evergreen Assessment (where applicable) to ensure transparent and accurate reporting.
• Continuously seek to identify further opportunities for reduction in both operational and supply chain emissions.
Altair Healthcare fully recognises the critical importance of environmental sustainability in public sector delivery. Through our Carbon Reduction Plan and supporting measures, we are actively contributing to a greener, more sustainable health and care system.
